Doug Ellington - Trumpet
Doug Ellington has been a musician for over 20 years. He's the grand-nephew to eminent composer, band leader, and musician Duke Ellington. In 2003, Doug formed "A New Urban Groove" - blending different cultures into a language of soulful expression where jazz fusion meets urban grooves, along with some sassy blues and rock weaving, too.
"Doug Ellington truly lives in a world of sound. Over the years I have known him, I have seen him on many stages with not only his group.
San Francisco Bay Area local Doug Ellington fuses Jazz, Hip-Hop and R&B into a wild, yet smooth groove. All About Jazz notes that, for Ellington, "music [pulses] through his bloodstream." This trumpet player, composer, and bandleader is talented beyond the likes of his grand uncle, The Duke himself.
New Urban Groove - Jazz
The group is founded on the rich jazz tradition of improvisation, and embraces a variety of jazz styles, especially straight-ahead and funk, with some elements of avant-garde and even smooth jazz. Most of the tunes are intricately arranged for the two lead horns, mainly by Ellington, and feature catchy tunes with driving grooves and plenty of room for spontaneous improvisation. In Ellington's words, "A New Urban Groove was organized not only as an outlet for the expressive musicians who comprise it, but also to provide an alternative for listeners who love the spontaneity of improvised music while still holding value to a rhythmic pulse that will get the toes tapping and the rump shaking." ~ Jazz
Dave Kim - Electric Violin
Dave was the concert master of his middle and high school orchestras. He competed in state wide solo competitions and received the highest scores. As a classically raised musician, Dave wanted to branch out and play music that his friends and peers would appreciate. He taught himself how to play guitar in high school and learned popular music. Post college, Dave found himself at an open mic and was asked to perform with many musicians. This is where he learned how to improvise to various styles of music on the violin. Fast forward to 1999, Dave moved to the Bay Area, purchased a Zeta five string Jean Luc Ponty jazz fusion electric violin and a Boss loop station pedal. Dave joined a band and hit the road sharing large and small stages across the country with Hootie and the Blowfish, Third Eye Blind, Dishwalla, Everclear, Marcy Playground, Bittersweetand the Temptations to name a few. After a couple years, he then transitioned out of the bars and music venues into the nightclubs and began improvising with top named DJ’s in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. After performingshows with the likes of Diplo, DJ Dan, Whitenoize, Donovan, Trevor Simpson, DJ AM, Travis Barker, DJ Solomon, Randi Zuckerberg, Kaskade, Mark Farina, and Bad Boy Bill, Dave decided to shift his talent and experience to corporate events and boutique destination weddings. VINYL STATION - Indie Acoustic Rock
In 2010, Matthew and Brendon were mistakenly double booked at a gig. They decided they would both stay and take turns back and forth, until they realized they knew each other's songs. So on the spot, they decided to finish the gig playing together as a duo. It was magic. And that's how Vinyl Station began.
Vinyl Station opened for Rob Thomas on a 67 city tour in some of the most iconic venues in America. The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The Beacon Theater in New York City, the Moody in Austin. Rob Thomas's fans overwhelmed Vinyl Station with their love. Matthew said later that “nothing can prepare you for that feeling of being in the song with such an audience.”
Dustimmoff Records out of Nashville heard their band "This is exactly the sound we're looking for. These guys are going to be huge." They signed Vinyl Station within days, and began recording their new album in just weeks.
The new Vinyl Station album - their first with Dustimmoff Records - will be released in 2017.
